La coordination des filiales par les firmes multinationales dans les pays émergents asiatiques
Thèse en Sciences de Gestion, soutenue le 1er décembre 2022.
Mots clés : configuration, coordination, FMN, pays émergents, Asie
The high economic growth rate of emerging Asian countries contributes to the interest of multinational companies (MNCs), resulting in the position as the primary beneficiary of foreign direct investments for Asia. This research focuses on understanding the coordination of subsidiaries by MNCs in Asian emerging countries, in order to identify the specificities of the coordination in these countries, their consequences and the reasons for their existence. We study the configuration of the regional organization and the coordination mechanisms implemented by MNCs. These mechanisms can be formal (coordination by people, by results, and bureaucratic) or informal (lateral relations, informal communication and organizational culture). We conducted thirty interviews with three European MNCs. The results show the primacy of coordination by people and coordination by results, whereas the priority objective of MNCs is to increase sales or maintain a dominant position. Formal and informal mechanisms are combined and even confused. Thus, formal coordination can generate informal coordination, which is a source of trust, fundamental in Asian relationships. The role of the manager is key with his appropriation of the coordination. The specificities of coordination would thus be as much linked to the leaders as to the cultural aspects of the countries. Regarding the regional organization, the grouping of countries in terms of low turnover under the supervision of a manager allows for greater efficiency. The role of the regional headquarter is highlighted as a relay between the headquarter and the subsidiaries but also as an actor of the regional coordination and responsiveness.
