The “New narratives in the History of Philosophy” Project
Published on January 25, 2022 – Updated on March 1, 2022
The “New Narratives in the History of Philosophy” project is an international scientific collaboration carried out in partnership with several North American, Australian and European universities, including Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University, which is a founding member. The project has been awarded GRANT financing of $2.78 million, shared between all the partners, for a seven-year period, until 2028.
Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and led by Simon Fraser University (Canada), it is directed within Jean Moulin University by Marie-Frédérique Pellegrin, associate professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, member of IHRIM and researcher at IRPHIL. A member of the Partnership Board and of the project’s Journal Committee Board, she also works within the University with Isabelle Garnier, associate professor at the Faculty of Arts and Civilisations and member of IHRIM-Lyon3, and with Clément Raymond, PhD student at the Faculty of Philosophy, member IHRIM-Lyon3.
The overall approach of this research and of the project is to participate in the modification of philosophical practices by enriching the philosophical works produced by women and by individuals from other marginalised categories to enable the discipline to become more inclusive and diverse.
Main objectives of this partnership
The project, which runs from 2021 to 2028, is being carried out with 12 partner academic institutions. Various symposiums, seminars and other actions will be performed within the framework of the project (updates can be followed on the project website), including an international symposium planned at the Jean Moulin University in 2026.

Enriching the philosophical canon by developing new narratives
The project aims to reconfigure and enrich the philosophical canon by developing new narratives of our philosophical history that honour the contributions of women philosophers and of different types of “minor” and marginalised contributors.Main objectives of this partnership
- To facilitate research collaboration within an international network of researchers, students and academic institutions that will help develop these new narratives;
- To continue to design research tools, to develop and adapt pedagogical resources intended to enrich the teaching of the history of philosophy according to these new narratives;
- To train a new generation of researchers to produce new studies on these non-canonical philosophical figures;
- To raise the general public’s awareness of aspects of our intellectual heritage that have been neglected for too long.
